Sports Personality of the Year: Time for a change in format?

Last night saw the 2014 Sports Personality of the Year presentation and I can’t help thinking that the show and the award has become a farce. The bizarre booking of Simple Minds to open the show, the sheer tediousness of the entire event, the ridiculous shortlist of candidates and the public choosing the wrong winner. Is it time for SPOTY to change the format of the show?
